To protect and to fleece?
I'm all for law and order, but sometimes things can go overboard.
Is that what's happening now?
Maybe it's my imagination, but I've been noticing a lot more Monroe cops speed traps. Are these guys lurking longer and giving out more tickets to generate more money? Or do they just have nothing better to do? Or have they always done this and I haven't noticed.
Fer instance, the other day I was going down north monroe street and just happened to glance over at the Delisle Center parking lot, that place where the Comcast office used to be. Hidden behind the big Delisle sign was a city police car, radaring the southbound traffic. It's a perfect place for a speed trap. About 45 minutes later, I'm heading in the other direction and there's the same cop car, same place.
It seems like there are a lot more speed traps around town. Anyone have the same feeling?

It's only a speed trap if you're speeding. Follow the law and you will have no problems. Offenders should get tickets, and if that helps the City, then so be it.
That's a good definition of s speed trap, anonymous one. Just so we know where you're coming from though, do you think driving five miles over the limit warrants a ticket?
Speed limit = the legal limit of speed you are allowed to travel at. Any over that, and you could get a ticket. Kind of like the question, is it littering if I only throw out a gum wrapper, or is it stealing if it's only worth a dime?
DRIVING ONE MILE OVER THE LIMIT IS A VIOLATION OF THE SPEED LIMIT AND THE LAW; HENCE THE PHRASE SPEED LIMIT.
MOST OFFICERS GIVE QUITE A BRAKE TO SPEEDERS. IT IS NOT UNCOMMON FOR AN OFFICER TO UNDERWRITE A SPEEDER. SAY THE PERSON IS 15 OVER THE LIMIT, MANY OFFICERS ONLY WRITE 'EM FOR FIVE OR TEN OVER THE LIMIT.
It is obvious that the keeper of this pus bag blog does support law and order.
You are probaly the same jerk that passed me when I was driving the speed limit of 30 MPH and then jammed on his brakes in heavy traffic in front of me. The jerk then knocked on my window. I called 911 and explained someone wished to attack or rob me.
The jerk said I was driving too slow. When I pointed a legal hand gun in his face he decided that he wished to end the debate.
In this day and age one must be armed and dangerouss because of jerks like you that want to make your own laws and not support the efforts of our police department. If you try such an antic with armed citizens who obey the law you might need to go find the top of your head.
Slow sown and relax.
Rick, the problem here is that Frenchtown needs a 40 mile per hour speed limit which makes the transisition to 30 easier. The five over ticket you got means you wou were doing 20 over and got a political break from the cops. Heck you might be on council someday and the cops need more retirement benefits.
Were you speeding to get to a downtown beer joint or to the Monroe Evening News to write your page?
Only if it is jerk offs like the observer who are speeding.
Rick, are you just hacked off because the DDA doesn't get a share of the speed trap revenue?
I bet you could have a better hoe down with all that tax payer dollars plus some speeder revenue.
You are a useless jerk. I can't wait till Worrell kicks your useless kiester to the curb.
Even if Worrell is dumb enough to nominate your worthless "observer" *^& to another term I really doubt you could get Beneteau, Paisley, Conner, et al to vote for it.
Better get a hobby Ricky boy!
Just to clarify things. I never said I got a ticket. I didn't.
But, if anyone can pry themselves away from their computers and actually go out and talk to police officers, you'll find that there is some concern among them about one of them who doesn't cut any motorist any slack -- or "underwrite" a ticket.
That creates a PR problem for the rest of them. I'm not saying it's wrong to write tickets for going 1 mile over the limit. I'm saying there's apparently a lack of consistency that's causing some concern. But the original post was meant to question whether there seemed to be more speed traps. Apparently none of the well informed commenters on this blog know the answer. So be it.
Rick,
Of course there are more speed traps.
Don't be an idiot.
The cops are trying to justify their existence by generating revenue.
The next step is the Newport Fire Mafia AKA the Monroe Fire Department will start setting fires to emphasize how important they are.
It is not that I didn't understand your post. It is just that it was so boring I would rather take the opportunity to discuss just about anything else.
Thank you for the string Mr Obvious.
Observer,
Let me get this straight.
Your breaking news is that at least one officer of the Monroe Police Department is a certifiable honest, diligent policeman who writes citations for what actually happens.
It is unfortunate that this officer didn't help my wife when she got rear ended. That Monroe Police officer decided not to write any citation to the teenager that rear ended her. I guess the officer was friends with the teenagers mommy, so he cut him a break.
So - what would you prefer?
A bad rap for following the law strictly or a bad rap for following the good old boys club?
I guess I would prefer the straight shooter.
I am glad I have been never pulled over by the officer who didn't ticket the kid who hit my wife. I would hate to go to jail for busting a cap in the officers head for trying to write me a speeding ticket because I didn't have friends in the right places.
I feel bad. I don't own a pus bag of a blog or even a pus bag. I suck. Now that my suckiness is dispensed with how about this.
City of Monroe Police is;
Overstaffed. (size of the City v. number or residents).
Grossly over-funded. (do we really, REALLY, need heat monitoring cameras? Did we really, REALLY need to purchase new handguns).
Misused. (Irrespective of what the first posted may think using Police Officer's to "raise money" (if that is what is happening) is inappropriate. Of course, we maintain a CALEA certification at what cost for what benefit? How does this expenditure enhance the City Police? It does look good on a resume but otherwise - not so much.
Anonymous four that stated he pulled a gun. I call BS. Please, everybody is always a stand up, law abiding guy in there post. Truth, we all have or will speed and have violated the law. Just like the Monroe City Police Officer I saw on Washington St. talking on a cell phone (don't we have that whole distracted driving issue?).
This type of revenue enhancement is a bus bag of suck. Sorry, but it is true. Just like the Cities idea to research the idea of billing an insurance company for Police involvement during an accident. Problem - we live in a no fault state - who will get the bill? Identifying the person "at blame" or "culpable" means we as a municipality will have affixed responsibility - therefore, fault. Anybody else ready call there insurance company over this? You should be - such policies could (and most likely will) increase the cost of your insurance if you have a City of Monroe address. Sound like what you want?
Dear Alacajun,
I think you have many good points. Disbanding the city cops and turning it over to the county sheriff makes sense. It works for a township or two with a larger population than we have.
Someone is always looking for stupid ways to spend money. A good hot round in a 40 Cal Smith is much the same as a 45 ACP. the whole idea is to be able to shoot straight.
Rick needs canned as DDA leader simply because he has the personality and mentality of a rag picker. The idea of seting grave stones aright to attract people to the downtown district is stupidity beyond belief.
I wish he would take this stupid blog and either open it back for intellegent conversation. Rich just ack the question idf the DDA ought to be disolved or you continue to skim taxes for andther hoe down. I thoug a big time disk jockey got fired for the hoe down talk.
Pull your head out of your toonin hole and resign.
Talking to the cops is the relm of you and Compora. Linda has mote to offer than you do when you get down to earth.
Rick,
Lighten up a bit.
Regarding writing a speeding ticket for some small amount over the speed limit: federal motor vehicle codes mandate that auto manufacturers produce speedometers with an accuracy of within +/- 5 mph at 50mph:
http://tinyurl.com/394dhf
(The section on speedometers is just over halfway down the page at that link.)
Add typical radar measurement tolerance of +/- 1 mph to that +/- 5 mph and the result is that any speed measurement less than 6 mph over the limit isn't a reliable determination of speeding.
