Will anyone take the bait?
Here's another freebie!
Don't all you campaign workers whip out those cell phones all at once, but given the fact we have no less than FIVE mayoral candidates (okay maybe we really just have two), which one is going to be the first to challenge the rest to a debate?
I think I remember the last time out (or maybe the time before?) Iacoangeli tried to arrange a debate with Cappuccilli and Cappuccilli had a schedule conflict or stomach conflict or something, I'm not sure which.
But even if one can't be arranged, you score points calling for a debate right? That's got to be good for at least three votes. Given the margin in the last mayor election, that might be enough to decide the winner.

Nope!
I would hate for the local newspaper to sponsor a debate as they have in the past. If they could reduce the error rate on items reported as facts they might qualify but presently they score below the fifth grade level. The News would just use the debate to help add credibility in picking their winners. It is already clear that the News again has picked John Boy and Linda Babe to be two of our leaders.
Notice how the sports page fills section two and is now making the front page. My conclusion is that the debate would be a contest conducted and reported as a mud wrestling event.
I would love a debate. How about getting the DMBN to work with the River Raisin Center and putting it on. Call the folks at IMPAC to see if they would like to tape it.
Instead of a "debate" lets come up with ten real questions that could be asked and answered. (give each candidate one minute thirty seconds to answer each question).
Maybe some questions could be:
1 - As Mayor, what will you do with the City of Monroe Operational Study?
2 - As Mayor, what can resident's expect your budgetary priorities will be?
3 - As Mayor, what do you see for the future of the Downtown Development Authority?
4 - If elected, how will you handle the Cities current retirement program liability?
5 - What is your vision for the City of Monroe and how, as Mayor, do you see us getting there?
6 - Do you believe that there are any programs or departments that should not, considering our financial outlook, be cut and if so why?
7 - Are you in favor of selling of current properties (building or parcels) that are held by the City? Understanding that these properties include those held by the Port Authority or other agencies - if so, why or why not?
8 - Do you believe, based upon your knowledge, that the City is overstrengthed compared to other like size Cities? If so what would you do to change this? If not why?
9 - What do you plan to do as Mayor to instill a return to civility?
10 - If you were elected Mayor what do you feel is the most important thing you need to accomplish for your time in office to be successful?
A true debate would be nice, but honestly I would like to see it done for all the council positions.
As was stated earlier the Mayor is only one vote, equal to that of any councilmember. They do have some intangible power, and perhaps have some extra control over the agenda items, but they are only one vote. As such we need to scrutinize every council candidate equally.
If we ever get around to amending the city charter I would like to see them implement a new rule that you can’t get elected to council without garnering over 50% of the voters. If a single candidate didn’t get 50%, then a runoff election should be held between the top two candidates.
I think the only reason Linda Compora was elected in the last election, and why she has a good chance of winning in this election, is she ran against 2 people. I doubt she could ever get over 50% of the vote against a single candidate.
In this Mayoral election with 5 candidates someone could win with 21% of the vote. It would be difficult for this individual to call that a mandate and push their agenda.
Besides the potential cost of an extra election does anyone disagree?
Roundybout.
As Follows...
1 - As Mayor, what will you do with the City of Monroe Operational Study?
ANSWER: Throw it away!
2 - As Mayor, what can resident's expect your budgetary priorities will be?
Answer: If IACO finish bankrupting the city. Earn my PhD in another useless planning degree at City Expense. If anyone else adjust staffing by cooperating with the townships and sheriff on public safety issues.
3 - As Mayor, what do you see for the future of the Downtown Development Authority?
Answer: IF IACO build brick outhouses in every vacant lot downtown and put Port-A-Jons next to them like the brick outhouse on Saint Mary’s park. Bond the project to insure the DDA existsd another 700 years.
4 - If elected, how will you handle the Cities current retirement program liability?
If IACO retire everyone five years earlier and double the pension.
If anyone else convince them of the realities of life, and get them to decertify their respective featherbedding associations and have them work until they are old enough to retire. This is not the UAW in 1970!!!
5 - What is your vision for the City of Monroe and how, as Mayor, do you see us getting there?
If IACO spend like a dope crazed sailor.
If anyone else cut costs and taxes.
6 - Do you believe that there are any programs or departments that should not, considering our financial outlook, be cut and if so why?
If IACO cut no one.
If anyone else keep Ryan because he can fill in for anyone who gets mad and quits. Keep the I quit papers filled for anyone who has a problem with my style.
7 - Are you in favor of selling of current properties (building or parcels) that are held by the City? Understanding that these properties include those held by the Port Authority or other agencies - if so, why or why not?
If IACO buy more because ricky Babe and Linda Babe says that is what the city does.
If anyone else disband the Port Comission and DDA so taxes can be cut.
8 - Do you believe, based upon your knowledge, that the City is overstrengthed compared to other like size Cities? If so what would you do to change this? If not why?
If IACO buy all new fire and police rolling stock and sell to IACO’s brother for a dollar each—no bid deal like the fire engine sale.
If anyone else, put in larger diameter water pipes (The evening misinformer calls this thickness not diameter.)
9 - What do you plan to do as Mayor to instill a return to civility?
If IACO make Linda Babe mayor Pro Tem, never show up and watch on TV at home.
Anyone Else: If Linda Babe is reelected, get a court order to put her in a straight jacket and have a doctor ready to give her a hypo. You cannot have a decent meeting with a crazy woman in charge hooting and running around with the lampoon family griping about a $100.00 Kodak Camera factory equipped with a cobalt eye laser cannon
10 - If you were elected Mayor what do you feel is the most important thing you need to accomplish for your time in office to be successful?
If IACO complete the process to bankruptcy.
If anyone else cut costs and provide a general 5 mil tax cut in the second year.
Got any more???
So, Another Observer are you saying you will not vote for John? Good answers with the exception of "throwing out" the operational assessment. Sorry, but you don't pay 80,000.00 for something and do nothing with it.
I wish that this Council (lead by the Mayor and Ms. Edwards (who are not seeking re-election) would take some proactive steps and start instituting some of the changes recommended now! Imagine, you have a balloon payment do on your house in July 2008 - do you start getting the funds ready now or do you "hope" that you get a raise to cover the cost. That's kinda what we are doing. Too bad.
