Is Ebli on thin ice or solid ground?

Wow. If I heard right on the radio, State Representative Kate Ebli was one of two Democrats who voted against applying a tax on certain services to ease the state budget crisis.
That means one of two things -- or both: She's viewed within the Democratic party as someone who could be unseated by a Republican who dared to portray her as a tax and spender, or she knows her Monroe area constituents will hang her with that come election day and is smart enough to vote accordingly.

There is always a third option. Rep. Ebli believes that taxes are not the answer? It could happen.

Anyhow - do the Republicans really have a viable candidate? Please tell me that we are not going to have John Manor or Matt Milosch trotted out again? Please. Maybe, Ed Paisley could run against her? (OK - that was just meant to be a joke - Roundybout. Besides, I would prefer a nice cold beer instead of Ice Cream. But, thanks for the offer. Truce? why not).

Observer,

Could it be Kate understands the burdens the poor Michigan Economy have put on its citizens?

Could it be Kate understands that many families are barely scrapping to get by?

Could it be Kate thought the budget could be balanced by cutting silly things, and improving efficiencies?

Could it be Kate didn’t agree with our socialist governors thought that the only thing that could “fix” Michigan is a tax increase?

Only a total jerk would propose a tax on services such as a haircut or other service. There is no such thing as a budget crisis. If a family foolishly overspends their means they may go bankrupt.

Why should the state overspend of stupid ideas like scholarships for everyone who blunders through high school?
We have little need for college educated persons in this post industrial society. Those who are genetically superior will either be born rich or work their way through college.

I take back my ponderings in the previous post.

Kate did vote for higher income taxes for all of us.

Kate is all for higher taxes because the state needs the money modernize and invest in education to attract businesses.

Kate believes Jennifer Granholm knows how to use your money more wisely than you or the company you work for ever could.

Another democrat that thinks government is the solution.

Not that I have a problem with Ebli. But if you vote against a services tax (a user pays tax) why then would you vote for an income tax increase, which is far broader and nails everyone. Is it because she understands the burdens the poor Michigan economy has put on its citizens or that she understands that many families are barely scraping to get by?

One way to increase revenue would be give preferential treatment to Michigan grown reefers. Stop sending our money to Columbia.

Legalize all drugs because excessive police costs are spent on taking a simple gift of God away from the poor and black folks who enjoy some relief from despair.

Tax golf balls, accessories, and green fees at a higher rate than cigarettes. Torn rotor cuffs and other injuries cost society at large too much in medical expenses and will not kill quickly as lung cancer does.

Remove all speed limits on freeways—it causes no problems in Germany. Speeding is another victimless crime. Why waste time on enforcement? Let Darwinism sort out the fit from the unfit drivers.

Tell the mad mothers to keep their darn kids out of the street so we drunks will not hit them.

Castrate sex offenders to save the cost of maintaining a registry and even imprisonment. Beeks Bar could serve the balls and fries up on alternate Monday evenings.

Need more savings???

Dear alacajun,

Sorry I did not answer you promptly. What we need was a benchmarking study of our competition. Please let me state that the township boards are as befuddled as our council over issues like a detention pond and the useless at present Greenwood extension.

It would be correct to say that state law makes competing with the townships much like our manufacturers competing with china. Even so, they are the completion.

I do not dislike IACO and will admit honest respect for the man. However he cannot have a council that can keep his ideas in line with what is affordable.

Another Observer;

Thanks. I agree regarding John Icoangenili. He is an intelligent, talented man. However, unless if he were to become Mayor again I would be scared. He seems to allow his ambitions to push further than his (or the citizen's) line of credit.

I drove by his home yesterday (no not stalking, had to go down third street) and saw what I can only think of as a very unholy trinity of yard signs out front; Comproa, Iccoangenlli and Floraday. It got me to thinking; what if all three win? What if you then throw in Molenda (he of the Pro Icoangeneli speech regarding the dismissal of Ms. Manns) or Guyor? This would be a horrible case of subtraction by addition. We will have handed four of our seven votes over to folks that have difficult professional histories: Compora, enough said. Iccoangenili, just how is it that a "splash park" when nearly 120,000. over budget and was constructed on land not even owned by the City? Floraday, how about we ask the DMBN there opinion of his "leadership" with the DDA or ask what other "pet project" may get pushed by him or his wife (keep in mind she and her committee pushed with United Furniture building). Guyor, how are the historical society folks doing? Oh, that's right - we don't know because there meetings are closed and minutes are not available. Of course I am sure that those yearly meetings at the county club are informative. Molendia, again, protesting the termination of Ms. Manns makes me wonder his ability to read and understand documents, "at will" carries a heck of a wait. Besides, did he complain with Mayor Icoangeneli dismissed folks?

The Greenwood expansion should not occur. Paul Wickenheiser was the only real reason to consider this. He is gone and the board of the housing commission has hired two people to fill the position. First was a grandson (I think) of Mabel Kerns who didn't work out. Currently they have a former guy from the YMCA who has ran his mouth enough at the housing commission that he wants to leave the housing commission in less than six months and return to the YMCA! Must be a prime job or must be a wonderful board of directors! Either way such instability should not be given land at such a great price. Besides, does the City really need more low cost apartments?

I don't think the Cities assessment was a benchmark against comparable communities (budget, size, amenities) for a reason. I think that some of the folks involved got what they wanted. Consider who "REALLY" got all of this started by writing a wonderful observational assessment of the Cities employees as the interim city manager. Either way, lets save the money indicated and move forward.
