Did she say consolidate?

Gov. Granholm's state of the state address tonight sounded like a bit of bad news for local governments.
She seemed to be saying she'd tie local revenue sharing payments to local governments that prove they're consolidating services. Those that don't will be penalized.
Looks like someone better accelerate plans to meld fire departments and police agencies.

The City of Mt. Clemens (popoulation 17,000) reciently disbanded their police department and contracted for police protection through the Macomb County Sheriff Department.

In a pervious posting ("Monroe's Idlest" December 12, 2006) you claimed that the police department had little to do. This could be a way to go. They could save a lot of tax money and still have good police protection.

How about this: The city contracts with Frenchtown or Monroetown to provide police service, undercutting the sheriff's department. There shouldn't be anything wrong with a little friendly competition among public entities. Maybe they could provide ambulance service too. That might be better utilization. Hey, someone suggest that to city council!

with two other municipalities to patrol they wouldn't be Monroe's idelest anymore.

They would have a few other parks to coop up in during the midnight shift.
